Stage 10 - Ethical considerations

This stage is all about how the investigation can ethically affect the community or the public. This can be done due to the media and press conferences. It can also affect the people close to the victim. There is always a debate to whether ethically is it right or not. When the media are involved in crime issues they can either make it better for the officers because by reporting about the crime in newspapers it means that more people will voluntary to help out and raise awareness for the area to watch out for example if a child went missing. But the media can also make things worse because they can edit crime issues to make it more eye catching for people to read. By doing this they can upset the victim or the victim’s family because they don’t want their crime put all over the news and especially if the story has been incorrectly portrayed for media purposes only. This is why it could cause an ethical issue. The same thing happens with press conferences as media uses. But sometimes a press conference is more beneficial because the story can’t be changed and emotions can be shown to the public and in order to this can offer support. Usually people are too upset to be involved in press conference and this is why it is an ethical issue because it is distressing the victim or the victims family/friends. This stages importance depends on the case because many people get the option if they want to involve media and press conferences but depending on what the case is some people don’t get a choice. For example if someone famous committed a crime there is so many paparazzi following them anyway that it would be hard for them not to be involved in media. This stage is significant to follow out because it can give useful information that can be used whenever as it can be tracked down from media sources. If the media wasn’t very caring towards the ethical issues involved with a person’s case it can cause the person to be too scared to give out too much information as they will be distressed with all the questions coming at them that they might give out wrong information and cause someone else to be made guilty. This stage can make it harder for a successful investigation because most ethical issues involved means the investigation can’t do certain things, for example they can’t always knock and ask questions to people at their house because some people find this ethically wrong and won’t allow it. This can make the investigation harder as it means less information can be found out and it will take them longer to find evidence.

When the girls were reported missing a photograph was released of the two girls in man united tops which had been taken an hour before the girls disappeared, many people didn't agree with the release of this photograph due to it being the last photo of the girls. Nicola wells (holly’s mum) gave an interview of how she was hurt at seeing the picture published in the newspapers, many people considered this ethically wrong as it was very distressing for the girls family and friends. Huntley has been given a lot of hate and when the trial first came about had believed he had done it however until there was enough evidence he wasn't able to be charged no matter how much they thought he had done it. Many people had strong opinions on the fact he helped search for the girls and had interviews etc., how is that ethically correct, how could someone do that. There was alot of ethical issues in my case due to the amount of press involved and it being all over the news which was very distressing for the girls familys however it did benefit the case as because the case was all over the news and the interviews, this is where Ian Huntley and Maxine Carr did there interviews and because it was seen all over the world, investigators and people became suspicious about his involvement and how he was always on the TV which sparked an investigation into him so this stage did benefit my case.
