Stage 7 - Gathering and analyzing facts

On this step all evidence and facts are put together and fully analysed. This is done using forensic evidence and witness statements. By analysing all the facts and evidence they can try to come to a conclusion of who the killer is or even find some suspects. This stage is important because it is the final stage to analyse all the evidence and come to a judgement on what has been collected. Facts come in many forms such as forensic evidence, witness statements and from intelligence gathering such as previous convictions, life style and associates. Ethics should be considered as you have to treat everyone equal by taking information from everyone who gives their consent to give it and can dismiss any information as it could be beneficial to the investigation. the police also need to ensure that the peoples information whos are giving the information is confidential. There aren’t much ethical issues involved in this as it is a look through evidence and doesn’t affect the community or other people. In this stage analysing through the facts again makes it more successful as this can prevent any mistakes happening, by checking it twice it prevents errors and can prevent the acquittal of a guilty party. Depending on the crime this stage can be different. not every case is the same and will have the same evidence. a sexual crime may have different evidence to a theft and there are different methods to getting the data. in a theft CCTV can be useful, in a murder the previous convictions of the offender could help. this stage would differ for each case and the crime that is committed by the evidence available and information given.

The forensic evidence of a case determines the facts so it’s important to get as much evidence as you can at the time. Ian Huntley did everything he could to cover his tracks however he lefts things that only experts would find. He left behind a series of forensic footprints that led the police straight to his door. Jessica had a mobile phone on her who the parents told the police when the police tried to find its location it had either run out of battery or someone had switched it off. This evidence led straight to Huntley and made him the number one suspect. This evidence was crucial because had Jessica been anywhere else in soham the signal would have gone to the cell cite on the towns football field but Vodafone’s records proved it went 12 miles away at Burwell, when the experts retraced the phone signal and where it had been one of the hot spots was Huntleys house. When looking at Huntley’s previous convictions Huntley had a huge deal of accusations made about him mostly to do with underage girls which also lead the police straight to him. This stage maps out all the facts about the case and links it all together which is what happened with Ian Huntley looking at his previous convictions and what he was doing now helped the police with their case, so this helped and benefitted  my case a lot due to the information that was gathered and the analysing of it, also the media intrusion helped to get these facts as suspicions rose about Huntleys involvement which triggered an investigation where the previous allegations where found about him so produced successful outcomes, this stage was very important because it gave the the investigators facts from forensic evidence of the fingerprints and the girls football shirts which helped produce a link to Huntley.
