Stage 4 - Incident room

The incident room is on site facility and base where everyone gathers to talk over the case of the crime that has been committed. This is a very important stage which needs to be done because this is where all information is gathered and where witness statements can be taken and also any phone calls with information regarding the case, there is a hotline number where people with information can ring up and this will feed all the information into the incident room, there are dedicated and well trained staff where are employed just to deal with the incident room (MIT) major incident team, they deal with this procedure and help gather any information relevant this includes the public calling in with any information and it also helps the police to co-ordinate the operation in once place making the case more organised.
An incident room is used depending on the crime that has been committed. an incident room in used in major cases such as murder, terrorism etc. a major incident room is fully equipped with the HOLMES major incident computer system and relevant administrative machinery. the incident becomes the center of the operation, run by an office manager and is the common point as to which all information and evidence is directed for assimilation and assessment. the incident can be straight forward in a single crimes but is more complex in a case involving more than one police force. the investigators and officers in the incident room have to consider ethics when taking information and evidence from people as a lot of people will report things which arnt helpful however officers have to take every call seriously and treat every person on the phone equal, they also have to ensure that everybody's information and the information about the people who have called is confidential.
however an incident room can cause problems which the amount of calls the police receive it. can become to much. This stage can be significant depending on the case, it is suitable for a missing person or for a murder in the neighborhood. It can have ethical issues involved because it can mean a lot of people in the neighborhood will have to go out of their way to help the officers during this time and if they are helping at night time it could distress other neighbors and they could be annoyed at this. The neighborhood can decide to help or not depending on if they want to.  If the incident room is not set up important information may not be given to the officers and this information could be enough for them to find out where a missing person is. Also they could find out information on a criminal and use the information to figure out if they are held responsible or not. This can make a investigation successful but it depends on what crime has been committed, for example if someone was murdered a incident room wouldn't be most suitable because it is more useful when finding a missing child because the community get involved and give information. For a murder crime wrong information might be given out and this means that using this step in certain crimes will make the investigation unsuccessful as it will be wasting time that they cant waste.

This stage in my case came with errors due to the amount of calls received as the police became swamped and the media saw this however this did benefit the investigation as a ti off from the public helped police see Huntleys past which helped in his arrest which produced a successful outcome which was an important stage in my case. The incident room in an important stage of the investigation. An example of this and how it could have been better was in the Ian Huntley case, an incident room was in place used by the Cambridge police. An incident room was set up on the Tuesday and a special team of officers were placed in this room however although there was a major incident room set up and a dedicated team brought in there was said to be a lack of grip on the investigation. Two tabloid newspapers offered large rewards for any information relating to holly and Jess and then came thousands of telephone calls and the incident room where unable to cope with the amount of calls. This is an example of how much information the incident room has to deal with and how much pressure is on the team however because the incident room was unable to cope this should have been more organised however the amount of calls most where people just after the money.
